Board Chair, Peter Davidson has been conducting research and harm-reduction based intervention development around heroin-related overdose, hepatitis C transmission, and sexually transmitted infections among drug users in Australia and the United States since 1997. He is currently the project director for the 'UFO Study', a long-running epidemiologic study of hepatitis C and overdose among young injecting drug users conducted by the University of California, San Francisco. He is also a PhD candidate in the medical sociology program in the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco.
Daniel H. Ciccarone, M.D., M.P.H., has been providing community based primary care in San Francisco for 15 years. He is an Assistant Professor in Family and Community Medicine and Anthropology, History and Social Medicine at UCSF, where he directs a number of research projects utilizing both quantitative and qualitative methodologies, which aim to deepen our understanding of HIV risk taking among socially marginalized groups. At the UCSF School of Medicine he takes pride in revising medical curricula to enhance competencies in working with diverse populations including drug-using populations.
Alexis Martinez, PhD, MPH completed her doctorate in Medical Sociology at the University of California, San Francisco, and an MPH in Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases at Yale University. Currently she is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Center for AIDS Prevention Studies at UCSF. During her graduate study, she worked with Dr. Alex Kral at the Urban Health Study to conduct community-based research with urban poor populations. Dr. Martinez will become a faculty member at San Francisco State University in the Department of Sociology and continue her research on the criminalization of drug use and its relationship to HIV/AIDS in the United States.
Julie Leadbetter has over 11 years experience working and organizing in low-income communities, principally with homeless communities advocating for affordable housing and services. She is currently the Community Programs Coordinator at the Mission Neighborhood Resource Center, a homeless drop-in center in the Mission District, where she oversees all community building and community organizing programs. Julie works in collaboration with HYA to provide a weekly syringe exchange and social program at MNRC called Ladies Night. She is a graduate of Stanford University in Anthropology.
Michele Mozelsio, PA-C has been a volunteer medical provider with HYA’s needle exchange for over 6 years. She is currently working as a PA-C with the San Francisco Dept. of Health, Housing and Urban Health Clinic. Before becoming a Physician Assistant, Mrs. Mozelsio was the Deputy Director of the Haight Ashbury Free Medical Clinic.
Jamye Ford has more than 10 years experience working to provide health care and corollary services within underserved communities. He is currently Project Director for the UCSF's UFO VAX Study, an NIH-funded clinical trial focused on homeless, young injection drug users; the study works in collaboration with HYA to provide hepatitis A and B vaccinations and basic medical care to clients. He is a graduate of Columbia University with a Master's in Public Health and African-American Studies.
